The TMS experience is a gentler and simpler experience compared to ketamine.

Your day starts off with no special preparations. You can drive to the clinic yourself for your appointment.

At the clinic, you will be guided to sit in a nice comfortable chair. You will be asked to remove all magnetic items from your head down to your shoulders. You'll be offered ear plugs, as the machine may get a bit loud. Our clinician will then position the TMS machine to the appropriate location on your scalp, as per the psychiatrist's prescription. The machine will then start ticking away for the next 20 minutes. This will feel like a repetitve tap on your head. You will not need any sedation for this procedure. Some patients may experience side effects such as headaches, nausea, or seizures, but you will have a clinician monitoring you at all times to help you through any side effects and ensure safety. You can have your phone or Ipad with you to keep you occupied during the procedure.

After the session, you can drive home yourself. You may do up to 3 sessions per day, or choose to spread the sessions out over a longer period of time. You may not feel differently on the day, but may notice that your mental health improves the next day. You may need up to 35 sessions before the full effects are achieved.

As a psychologist, sometimes my clients are nervous to try TMS for the first time and I get lots of questions about it. This is such a good article to send to them as it is concise and easy to read, yet explains the process in a clear and reassuring way.

I came across this blog while learning more about mental health treatments and it explains the TMS experience in a clear, down to earth way. The balance between patient perspective and clinical insight felt honest. When discussing related care costs like hearing exam cost, it helps readers plan without stress. Overall the post feels practical, reassuring, and written for everyday Australians who want straight answers.
