Ketamine at sub-anaesthetic (low) doses have been successfully used to treat depression, PTSD, anxiety, and chronic pain.

The experience starts with getting ready for your appointment. There is no drinking 30 minutes beforehand, no eating 2 hours before, and no use of any intranasal sprays in the case of esketamine (intranasal ketamine).

You use an Uber, taxi, or a friend to drop you off, as there is no driving or operating heavy machinery for the day (risk of sudden sedation throughout the day).

At the clinic, you will be guided towards a dimly-lit room with gentle nature sounds serenading you in the background. There, you will sit on a nice comfortable chair and will be administered ketamine (through your nose or through an injection depending on your eligibility). For the next 2-4 hours, depending on your side effect profile and recovery. You may experience a gentle, mild dissociation, a feeling of detachment from your body or surroundings, a time distortion, or dream-like altered perceptions. Medical staff will always be on site to monitor and assist you if the experience becomes too overwhelming and help alleviate any side effects that may arise. Some patients don't experience any dissociation, but will still achieve the full mental health benefits.

After your session, you will need to be picked up as there is no driving or operating heavy machinery for the day. You may not feel differently on the day, but may notice that your mental health improves the next day. You will need to repeat the process roughly 6-12 times before the full effects are achieved, and may require periodic maintenance treatment to remain in remission.
